In addition to the riding lessons, campers also have the opportunity to learn about horse
management and are required to participate in the daily care of our herd. We have over 40
horses on the property and caring for them all takes a lot of hands! At SJ, we believe campers should
not just become great riders, but also great horse people.
In addition, we ask that
every camper participate
in one hour of clean barn
four times a week. We use
this time to muck out the
barn, paddock area, or
pastures. The oldest cabins
are required to help with the
morning feeding.
Each time we ride, it is the campers
responsibility to groom and tack up their
horse. When the lesson is finished, they cool down
the horse, untack them, and sponge or hose them
off when needed.
Our Barn Classes are elective activities that focus on equine
management subjects like horse nutrition, learning how/when to lunge,
horse show preparation, and equine first aid. Campers can choose up to
four hours of barn class a day. These hours can also include feeding the
horses lunch or dinner, watching a x-country lesson, or taking classes on
how to become a riding instructor.
